ANC president Jacob Zuma yesterday emphasised Finance Minister Trevor Manuel's stance that South Africa is not yet in economic recession.

Zuma was addressing the Tourism Business Council of South Africa in Johannesburg.

He urged the tourism industry to find ways to save jobs that would not involve lay-offs. "South Africa is not yet in a recession and we urge the tourism industry to secure jobs and look for other avenues apart from retrenchments," he said.

He acknowledged that crime levels are high in the country and said that it was the reason why some tourists "think twice" before visiting SA. "Crime is one of our top five priorities in the manifesto and it will also be tackled hard by the next government," he said.
