Police detectives yesterday warned that cash-in-transit guards may be investigated following the R1,5million robbery in Newcastle.

Six men made off with the money, a pistol and a cellphone after attacking the guards last week.

The guards had collected money boxes at the McDonald's outlet in Allen Street when they were attacked.

Police spokesperson Shooz Magudulela said the guards' vehicle was first blocked by a car that pulled out of a parking lot and then a second vehicle closed them in.

"The suspects were able to escape with money and no one was injured. It appears that six suspects were involved in the robbery," he said.

A senior detective in the organised crime unit said that police are puzzled by simple facts like why the guards did not notice when they were being jammed in by a vehicle coming from the parking area.
