Mathale takes over as acting premier

The executive committee of the Limpopo government has named ANC provincial chairperson Cassel Mathale as acting premier of the province.

The executive committee of the Limpopo government has named ANC provincial chairperson Cassel Mathale as acting premier of the province.

Mathale takes over from Sello Moloto until the legislature announces the new premier after the endorsement by the ANC's NEC in less than 30 days.

Mathale, 48, from Tzaneen, would serve both as MEC for roads and transport and as acting premier until early April, just before the elections.

ANC provincial secretary Joe Maswanganyi said during a media conference that three names were forwarded to the NEC as possible replacements for Moloto.

He said the name of the successful candidate would be made known soon after the endorsement by the NEC.

Moloto, a known lieutenant and erstwhile campaigner of former president Thabo Mbeki, became unpopular when Jacob Zuma defeated Mbeki at the ANC's elective conference in Polokwane.

His unpopularity was compounded after he contested and lost the provincial chairperson position to Mathale.

The last straw that broke the camel's back was when Moloto failed to mention the ANC prominently in his state of the province address in Lebowakgomo a fortnight ago. - Alex Matlala
