It may have been ANC Youth League president Julius Malema's birthday but flood-stricken Soweto residents were in no mood to party.

Visiting the victims of last week's devastation, which left 200 houses demolished and families destitute, yesterday the residents of Meadowlands and Braamfischerville openly displayed their anger.

"You've come here because you only want votes. We are not voting," shouted an angry resident.

Stopping to offer support at the home of Alice Nkosazana Mbunjana, who lives with 19 relatives in Meadowlands, the elderly woman said that although she had "lost many things" in the floods, she was grateful that her children were safe.

Malema pledged to arrange for volunteers to assist the families affected by the floods.

"These people need help as soon as possible so that their lives can return to normal," he said, while handing out food parcels.

Malema got more than what he bargained for when he visited Zenzile Khunene in Braamfisherville.

Khunene's house appears to be built on a natural wetland.

She complained of water constantly flooding her home. "We've complained several times to authorities but nobody does anything. They promise to come back but never do."
