Pieter Dirk-Uys was in his element at the launch of the manifesto of the Evita People's Party in a function that was characterised by witticism and satire.

Launched at the Johannesburg Theatre in Braamfontein yesterday, EPP's manifesto is a departure from the other parties' manifestos launched in recent months ahead of the April 22 elections. Though the EPP has been registered with the IEC, it will not contest the elections, Dirk-Uys said.

"Yes, I have registered with the IEC and have sent them my cheque which they have not cashed. However, our policy is that the people must lead and the leaders must follow. The people matter. Their opinion matters. Their vote matters. Without them we have no democracy," he said seated next to his guest, ANC spokesperson Jessie Duarte.

There were some surprises when a very important guest was introduced - ANC presidential candidate "Jacob Zuma".

Well, instead of Zuma in person, it was actually a doll, dressed in traditional regalia, complete with a shower mounted on top of its head. This character was introduced strategically after Duarte was ushered out of the conference, perhaps to avoid a confrontation with her.

The media show was a glimpse of what was to follow later in the evening. Dirk-Uys was to open his theatrical production, naughtily called Erections and Elections, at the Joburg Theatre.
