Police have arrested a man who has allegedly been issuing people with fraudulent medical certificates.

"He was formerly employed by a medical practitioner," Inspector Daniel Mavimbela said yesterday. "He was found using stamps and papers stolen from his former employer,"

The man was apparently fired two years ago by the doctor after allegedly stealing the receptionist's bank card and he allegedly left with the doctor's stamp and a medical certificate book.

Mavimbela said the 26-year-old Atteridgeville man was arrested on Monday following a tip-off. He said the suspect charged his "patients" R60 for a medical certificate.

His former employer, Dr Sello Malatjie, said the man started working for him in 2004 and was fired in 2006 for theft.

"I discovered that he sold pain killers but I gave him another chance. I got fed-up when he confessed to stealing my receptionist's bank card and subsequently withdrawing R1000.

I noticed that my medical certificate book was missing just after I had fired him," Malatjie said.
