Bay United's ongoing poor display is becoming a worry for some of their key players who fear that they will lose their jobs if the team is relegated.
This after Umlilo managed to collect only four points from their previous six matches which included a 1-0 defeat by fellow strugglers Thanda Royal Zulu last week.
The Port Elizabeth-based outfit are at the bottom of the Absa Premiership with 20 points from 24 matches, with six games left in their league programme.
United captain Duran Francis concede that their position on the log is a clear indication that all is not going well.
"We need to be more committed and show a lot more determination than what happened in the past. We had more opportunities in most of our matches but we failed to convert, while on the other hand we conceded unnecessary goals.
"We must keep on fighting to ensure that we move out of the relegation zone. It is a fact that we are down, but we are not yet out, we can survive," Francis told Sowetan yesterday.
His sentiments were echoed by goalkeeper Arthur Bartman who also feels that their jobs are no longer safe.
"We must not be scared to take responsibility, if we can't fight for anything else, let's at least fight for our jobs. Our problem is that we did not convert our chances, we lost concentration throughout the season," said Bartman.
"I am confident that we will survive should we change our attitude and be more committed."
If United are relegated, it would not only affect the players but would also be a blow to Eastern Cape, which has always hoped to have a professional side when South Africa hosts the 2010 Fifa World Cup .
The newly built Nelson Mandela Bay stadium, one of the host venues for the Fifa event, could possibly become a white elephant if United are relegated.
