The South African Airways (SAA) strike has entered its third week and management is still at loggerheads with the union.
Yesterday, Buti Manamela, general secretary of the Young Communist League, addressed striking workers and applauded them for taking up their grievances.
"It is good that you are showing management that the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) can be 10 times more arrogant than them.
"For the past 10 years thugs have been running SAA and this shows that management has no interest in workers and government," said Manamela.
He said the airlines' chief executive Khaya Ngqula, who is on special leave pending the outcome of mismanagement investigations, should be fired. "Khaya Ngqula should never set foot here again.
"The same applies to greedy managers who only come to work to sit in their offices and call their girlfriends using SAA resources."
Satawu members downed tools two weeks ago over "selective" payment of retention bonuses to senior management and the use of labour brokers.
The airline said there had been no effect on operations due to the strike. "Following meetings with the union over the weekend, SAA management has again committed itself to ongoing negotiations with labour to find a speedy solution to the present industrial action," the company said.
