Schools in Danone Cup action

Matome Lebea

The Western Cape will determine their provincial representative in the Danone Nations Cup when 16 primary schools battle it out at Jamestown sports grounds in Stellenbosch tomorrow, from 9am.

The national champions will represent the country in Brazil in October.

Cloetesville and Hlengisa will enter the fray as hot favourites considering that they have featured several times at provincial championships and also represented the province nationally.

It may not be plain sailing for the duo as the likes of Pieter Langeveldt, Protea Park, BJ Badenhorst, Restvale and Sullivan primary schools have the potential to cause upsets.

Other schools in the contest are Noordhoek, St Mary's, TM Mndanda, Phakamisani, Tyolerha, Saxonsea, Plantation, Andile and Injongo.

Mathews Mange, the provincial coordinator, said for the sake of avoiding unnecessary confrontations on the day, teachers should bring proper documentation.

"We anticipate a tough challenge considering that it is the wish of every school to represent the province nationally and also to win a trip to Brazil," Mange said.

The provincial winners will join Northern Cape's Kalksloot in the national championship scheduled for Soweto from May 29-30.

Other provinces will hold their championships as follows: Eastern Cape (March 7); Limpopo (March 21); KwaZulu-Natal (March 27); North West (April 18); Free State (April 25); Gauteng (May 2) and Mpumalanga (May 16).
