A Limpopo boy who was found near death after he almost drowned in a rivulet in Mahwelereng, outside Mokopane, last week was hailed as a hero and real survivor by his community.
The Makamaleka Primary School Grade 7 pupil received school uniforms, shoes, a tie and school bag from Ipopeng Funeral Home in Mokopane yesterday.
Lucaster Mongwe, 14, is expected to return to class on Monday. His mother, Christina Mongwe, said she was happy her son had survived.
Although Mongwe thanked the police for their prompt action, she accused the government of gambling with the lives of children by leaving the rivulet open, posing danger to their children.
Municipal mayor Bob Mmola said they are working round the clock to address the residents' concerns.
The bodies of Mongwe's young friends, who were coming from school with him when they drowned, were found at the side of the rivulet. The children - Sylvester Mongwe and Peter Mahlaola - were buried last Saturday.
Spokesperson for the Mahwelereng police station, Captain Sebotsaro Motadi, said two inquest cases would be probed.
