The family of a Soweto man whose remains were buried by the government mortuary claim this was done without their knowledge and want his body exhumed.
The family claim that Thokoza Ndlovu was buried "as a pauper" by the Diepkloof government mortuary in November last year despite the mortuary having their contact details.
"When we went to get his remains we were told he had been buried. Earlier they told us we could not bury him until the trial against his killer was over," said his brother Khanya Ndlovu.
He said the family had planned to bury Thokoza in November and perform a cleansing ceremony as he was killed by his younger brother.
"We want them to exhume his bones so that we can bury him in a dignified manner. What has happened to us is very painful because we want to perform our rituals."
Thokoza was killed by his younger brother Mbuso Ndlovu during a quarrel and was secretly buried in a shallow grave in the yard of their Dlamini home in 2006.
His remains were exhumed a year later after Mbuso had confessed to Khanya about the murder.
Mbuso was sentenced to seven years in October last year.
Gauteng health department spokes- man Phumelele Kaunda said the family "did not claim" the body when notified to do so.
She said a body was kept for 30 days and if it was not claimed it was then given a pauper's burial.
