History favours Wits over United

Maritzburg United will host Bidvest Wits in an Absa Premiership match at the Woodburn Stadium tomorrow afternoon in a clash that could go either way.

Kickoff is at 3.30pm.

The Team of Choice will be looking to tighten up their defence after conceding five goals to Lamontville Golden Arrows in their last outing.

The 5-2 loss away to Abafana Bes'thende last weekend saw American goalkeeper Hunter Gilstrap ejected from the club, and the injured Tashrique Goldman is now in a race against time to be fit to face Wits.

Maritzburg are precariously placed on 22 points from as many games, but should they add to their respectable home record -16 points from 10 matches - they will have a good chance of avoiding relegation.

The Clever Boys are on a high after their last match saw them hammer Thanda Royal Zulu 6-2 in Johannesburg. Wits were 5-0 up at half time but took their foot off the pedal when they could have brought up a rugby score against Amabhubesi.

The two teams have met on just three previous occasions in top flight league football and Maritzburg will have to make a small piece of history to claim three points, as they have not yet beaten Wits in a league game.

The Clever Boys have won two and drawn one, scoring seven goals in the process and conceding just one.

Earlier this season Wits handed the Team of Choice a football lesson, beating them 4-1 thanks to goals from Ashraf Hendricks, Sifiso Myeni, Dale Studzinski and Richard Rantjie.
