The mother of the 18-year-old Florida Park High School pupil who was stabbed this week says she was unaware that her son had problems with another pupil.

Gloria Magopane said her Grade 12 son, Jimmy, was a well-mannered boy who did well at school.

"Last Tuesday he was given a badge to be on the learner representative council. I asked him if he would cope with being on the LRC and being in the disciplinary committee, as well as be able to focus on his studies.

"He said that he would be fine with all the responsibilities.

"He was very excited about it."

About the stabbing, Magopane said: "I have not heard the whole story about how he got stabbed. What my son told me is that he was telling the other boy to wear his uniform properly.

"I did not know that he was always struggling with another pupil. He probably did not think it was a serious matter. He thought he could handle it."

Jimmy was stabbed on Tuesday when the Grade 11 pupil bumped into him. When he asked why he did that, it escalated into a fist fight that saw Jimmy stabbed in the stomach and arms.

The Grade 11 pupil, who cannot be named because he is a minor, appeared in the Roodepoort magistrate's court yesterday on charges of attempted murder. The case was postponed.

After the case, the school will institute its own disciplinary hearing against the pupil.

Magopane said she was happy with the way the school has been supportive since the incident.

Jimmy is recovering at 1 Military Hospital in Tshwane.
