Real designer communication

Once again the SABC will feature prominently at Design Indaba 2009 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from February 27 to March 1.

The conference is about pushing the boundaries of communication, in the same way as the national public broadcaster does.

Proudly South African, the SABC says it is committed to uplifting the nation because public broadcasting is about empowering citizens.

A previous participant, the SABC not only renewed its sponsorship of Design Indaba, but also its sole sponsorship of the Fashion Show, which will be happening concurrently with the conference.

For the third year running, the SABC sponsors a "by invitation only" masterclass, which will be headed by Lynda Relph-Knight, editor of Design Week since 1989, tomorrow.

This encompasses editing the world's first and only weekly design magazine and its daily website, as well as overseeing the Design Week Awards and Benchmarks prize scheme for branding.

The SABC again sponsors the Loerie Awards Travelling Exhibition, a local and international road show that showcases award-winning communication. This launch takes place at the indaba today.

Realising the need to fortify and celebrate South African creativity, Design Indaba last year partnered with the Creative Circle and The Loerie Awards.

They formed Creative Alliance and announced the South Award and exhibition, which is also sponsored by the national broadcaster.

The South exhibition will celebrate legends who have pioneered the upswing in a display of top South African creative icons of the past few years.

Its finalists will debut at Design Indaba 2009. Three South winners will receive cash prizes of R100000, R50000 and R25000.

The South exhibition will later also travel across the country as well as grace international arenas.
