Popular Capricorn FM deejay Skhumbuzo Mbatha found himself on the wrong side of the law at the weekend when he was arrested for drunken driving.
Mbatha spent several hours in the Mankweng police holding cells on Saturday night after traffic cops caught him driving under the influence of liquor.
The host of the afternoon drive time show, The Immaculate Drive, was driving from Mankweng near the University of Limpopo to his townhouse in Polokwane when he was caught at a roadblock at GaThoka village, manned by police officers and traffic cops.
This reporter was one of the people Mbatha called, asking for help at about 8pm on Saturday, apparently in an endeavour to avoid facing the full might of the law.
He was taken through a breathalyser test and was found to be above the legal limit of alcohol in the system.
Mbatha was charged with drunken driving and locked up in the Mankweng police holding cells for a few hours.
The police also alleged Mbatha had hurled insults at them, hence his arrest.
He was released after paying a R1000 admission of guilt fine and is expected to appear in the Mankweng magistrate's court today.
Ironically, Mbatha was quoted yesterday in Sowetan'ssister newspaper, Sunday World, as saying he was leaving Capricorn FM for rivals and his former employers, the SABC.
This is despite the fact that the public broadcaster had fired him a few years ago while he was working for Thobela FM in Polokwane.
Management then ruled him incompetent and Capricorn FM threw him a lifeline.
Mbatha was not the only well known person to be arrested for drunken driving at the weekend.
Former SABC newsreader Ramosibihla Ramakgolo was also arrested at a junction near Solomondale after he was found to have consumed liquor far above the legal limit.
Ramakgolo, who is on pension, also paid a R1000 admission of guilt fine.
Police spokesman Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba confirmed that both men would appear in the Mankweng magistrate's court today.
