William Gare, pictured, is tipped for the fight of the year award at tonight's yearly boxing ceremony staged jointly by Boxing SA and SABC at Carnival City in Brakpan.
It will be broadcast live on Blow by Blow from 9.30pm.
Just when he was being written off as washed up, "Dynamite" won the WBF super middleweight belt. Gare was good in his first defence against Australian William Sherrington and sheer poetry in motion against Jindrick Velecky from the Czech Republic in his second defence.
It's no surprise that the fight was nominated for the award as even those who knew nothing about boxing appreciated his finesse, ballerina-like movement and dexterity.
Other nominated fights are the SA light heavyweight match between Daniel Bruwer, which is expected to be brutal, and Anthony van Niekerk, the WBA International bantamweight boxing match between Tshifhiwa Munyai and Julio David Roque Ler as well as the national mini flyweight exciting title fight between Tshepo Lefele and Gideon Buthelezi.
Gare's fight, the WBA International and the SA mini flyweight clashes were all presented by promoter Blacky Seoe.
This Free Stater, who promotes under Robs Promotions, is tipped for the promoter's award.
Seoe did not enjoy broadcast rights in most of his tournaments but still did not charge an admission fee. Other nominated promotions are Rainbow, KK and Branco Sports Production.
The latter deserves the lifetime achievement award. Its owners, the towering Branco Milenkovic and pint-sized Jacob Matlala achieved beyond expectations last year.
Their fighter Cassius Baloyi should walk away with the sought after boxer of the year award. He made history when he broke his own record by claiming a sixth world title after dethroning Mzonke Fana of the IBF belt.
Baloyi is the former WBU super bantamweight, featherweight, IBO (twice) and IBF junior lightweight titlist.
Other nominees are Nkosinathi Joyi, Ali Funeka and Gare.
Baloyi's mentor Nick Durandt is favoured for the trainer's award due to his monumental achievements but Lennox Mpulampula, who trains Joyi (IBO champ), Lubabalo Msuthu (WBF) and Themba Joyi (SA champ) could cause an upset. They are nominated alongside Jabulani Malinga and Johnny du Plooy.
Durandt should snatch the managers award ahead of Manny Fernandez and Sihle Mnguni. Durandt has about 50 national and international champions who fight once or twice every year.
He also employs some of them as personal trainers in his fitness gym in Norwood.
Vus'Umuzi Malinga's marvelous fourth-round stoppage of Veeraphol Sahaprom in Thailand should earn Malinga the special achievement award.
Jared Lovett deserves the top prospect award. The "Storm" seems to have a bright future ahead of him. He is contesting it with Anele Makwelo, Tommy Oosthuizen and Wandile Mseleku.
Ali Funeka's poleaxing of Zahir Raheem in July last year deserves the knockout of the year award.
