Quick reaction by police led to the arrest of five men who had robbed a security guard at a shopping centre in Midrand.

Inspector Moses Maphakela said at about 4am yesterday, three men armed with a gun attacked a security guard at Carlswald Lifestyle centre in Midrand.

"The men took the guard's radio and two cellphones. They undressed him and locked him inside a toilet," said Maphakela.

As the men were preparing to continue on their spree an informant called the police, who rushed to the scene.

"When the men saw the police they dashed into two cars and sped off from the scene," he said.

Police gave chase and the men were arrested next to the Allandale off-ramp on the N1 highway.

Nothing was found on the three men.

Maphakela said two other vehicles sped off from the scene.

Constable Neria Malefetse said one of the vehicles was spotted in Alexander .

Police gave chase and arrested three men who were found with an R5 rifle with 134 rounds of ammunition, five R5 magazines and one round of AK47 ammunition.
