Mpumalanga Premier Thabang Makwetla is expected to give his last state of the province address today.
However, Makwetla, who came to the province as part of the intervention by the ANC national executive committee, and turned Mpumalanga around, will have a tough time convincing the people that he has indeed improved their lives.
Last year, nearly half of Mpumalanga's residents - polled in a TSN survey - said service delivery in the province was very slow. A whopping 49percent of people indicated their dissatisfaction with service delivery.
This led to the province's people "being the unhappiest in South Africa" when it came to service delivery.
Since he took over, Makwetla has reshuffled his cabinet four times.
Makwetla, regarded as an ally of former president Thabo Mbeki, is expected to quit after the upcoming elections. He will probably be replaced by someone who supports ANC president Jacob Zuma.
Leading candidates for the post are Dina Pule, David "DD" Mabuza and Charles Makola.
Pule is the hot favourite and is believed to be backed by ANC treasurer-general Mathews Phosa.
Makwetla is expected to highlight the state of education in the province. He is expected to comment on the decline of the matric pass rate, the delay in releasing the results and problems experienced with the school transport.
He is also expected to address the illegal strikes that affected the 2010 Mbombela Stadium in 2008.
