The University of Venda has welcomed a R59million grant from the Department of Education as a major boost to meet its research and academic needs.

Vice chancellor and principal Professor Peter Mbati said the funds will ultimately help the university shape its academic research for the benefit of the country.

Mbati said one of the pressing challenges that the institution was faced with was inadequate accommodation and lecture rooms - which had a direct impact on learning.

"Management will continue to pay special attention to infrastructure requirements for our university in order to deliver on our commitment as a quality-driven institution."

As with most rural universities, the institution largely depends on government grants, he said.
