Mpumalanga police believe they have made a breakthrough with regard to ATM bombings in the province, after the arrest of two men thought to be behind a series of hits.
The two men, prominent businessman Hunger Freddy Matsane, 40, and Sabelo Vincent Mowale, 28, were granted R5000 bail each in the Bushbuckridge magistrate's court on Monday.
This information was released by police only yesterday . The pair are expected to appear before the court on March 16, where they are expected to plead.
Mpumalanga police organised crime unit spokesman, Captain Leonard Hlathi, told Sowetan the men were arrested on February 11 and appeared in court the following day.
Mowale was arrested in Clau-Clau near White River and police said his arrest led them to Matsane, who was nabbed in Bushbuckridge.
"The suspects have confessed to the police on the bombing of the Standard bank ATM in the Bushbuckridge shopping complex in September last year where they managed to steal more than R200000," Hlathi said yesterday.
Hlathi said the two men took police to several ATMs they claimed to have bombed.
"The suspects will probably be linked to other ATM bombings in the province," he said.
Several ATMs have been bombed in the Bushbuckridge shopping complex and ATMs were destroyed in Acornhoek and Thulamahashe during the weekend of February 7.
More than 300 ATMs were bombed in the country last year.
