Axed national director of public prosecutions Vusi Pikoli is headed for a showdown with President Kgalema Motlanthe in the Pretoria high Court this week.

The presidency said yesterday that it intended to contest Pikoli's application to reverse his firing by Motlanthe.

In papers filed in court on Tuesday, Pikoli accused Motlanthe of having "contorted reasoning, ulterior purpose and acting in bad faith".

He said Motlanthe fired him to protect ANC president Jacob Zuma, from prosecution.

Pikoli is also interdicting Motlanthe from filling his position until the case is finalised.

He also accuses Motlanthe, the speaker in the national assembly, Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde - and the chairman of the national council of provinces, Mninwa Mahlangu, of acting with an "ulterior purpose" in dismissing him.

Mahlangu and Mahlangu-Nkabinde have been named as respondents in the case because parliament endorsed Motlanthe's decision to fire Pikoli.

"Motlanthe says he decided to dismiss me not for any of the reasons for which I had been suspended - but purely on the basis of the Ginwala report.

"But the thrust of the Ginwala report was that . I should be restored to my office," said Pikoli.
