The man arrested in connection with the killing of Vaal businessman Paul Langa has been identified as the family's gardener.

The man and his friends allegedly broke into his employer's house, held up members of the family and were robbing them when Langa was shot dead.

Langa and his wife own Malangeni Lodge in Walkerville. The house in which the incident happened is situated on the grounds of the lodge.

Police found the gardener in the house, but his friends had fled and police hunted them down. Police say he is in his late 20s.

Langa's daughter-in-law Carol, 23, said four intruders entered the house at about 8pm on Tuesday.

"I was in my bedroom with my husband, Malea, and our two cousins when an armed man stormed into the room. The man charged at the cousins and demanded cellphones and cash."

The two cooperated. He then pointed his firearm at Malea and demanded cash.

"My husband told him that there was R300 in his pocket. The robber then took it and said it was little. He assaulted him and fired a shot at the floor," said Carol.

She said another shot then went off in another room where Langa was.

"We heard him (Langa) screaming. I was shocked when I saw our gardener armed with a shotgun entering our bedroom to join the other robber.

"He also demanded cash before hitting me with the back of a firearm. He insisted that we not look him in the eye," said Carol.

She said the gardener ordered his gang to kill everybody in the house because they knew him.

But the other robbers refused and told him they were only there to rob and not to kill.

"They demanded car keys and loaded some of the appliances in a van parked outside. The gardener told me that he had killed Langa because he was stubborn and did not cooperate," said Carol.

A car belonging to an employee of the lodge, Eric Mnisi, was riddled with bullets and he was also robbed of R1000.

Constable Tebogo Lephoto said they arrested one man who was hiding in the house.
