Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini yesterday expressed grave concern at the closure of teacher training colleges in KwaZulu-Natal, saying this will result in the province running short of teachers.

Speaking during the official opening of the legislature in Pietermaritzburg, Zwelithini said the province was heading for a crisis. "We are heading to a situation, which, if not addressed with emergency, will result in a full crisis.

"We have been experiencing an exodus of nurses because everyone is looking for greener pastures, and I am afraid we will start experiencing the same problem with teachers," he said.

He said his concern over the closure of teacher training colleges had nothing to do with party politics, but that "it is a real problem that is building up".
