Pupil says teacher raped her
A high school teacher has been arrested following allegations that he raped his 15-year-old pupil after a school function on Saturday.
Police said that the 37-year-old teacher had been on the run since the incident and was only arrested yesterday.
Police refused to name the school where the alleged culprit was employed but Sowetan managed to establish that he was based at Acornhoek's Sethlakabje High School.
Acornhoek police spokesman Inspector Themba Twala said the girl had taken part in an athletics function at the Mapulaneng Further Education and Training College on the day of the alleged rape.
"When the function ended the girl and her friend saw the teacher driving towards the direction of their home and asked for a lift," said Twala.
The teacher gave the two pupils a lift but when they wanted to get out of the car they say he refused - telling them they could go home "later".
"The boy in the company of the girl panicked and jumped out of the moving car but the teacher did not stop. He instead drove away with the girl to a bottle store where she said he bought liquor," Twala said.
The boy was slightly injured after jumping out of a moving vehicle.
The teacher then drove back to Acornhoek where he was apparently renting a room and then allegedly forced himself on the girl.
She said he instructed her "not to tell anyone" about what had happened because people would just laugh at her.
She then went to a fellow female scholar staying near Acornhoek and asked for accommodation for the night before going home to inform her family about what had happened.
The family took her to Acornhoek police station where a rape case was opened against the teacher.
The girl was also taken to a doctor who confirmed that she had been sexually molested.
The teacher is expected to appear in the Acornhoek magistrate's court soon.
