The Proteas are on the verge of becoming the number one-ranked cricket team in the world if they win the Test against Australia at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg from March 26 to April 2.

The winner will be presented with the Reliance Mobile ICC Test Champions Mace which is a trophy that is awarded to the team ranked No 1 in the world.

World No 2 South Africa will have to pull out all the stops if they hope to dethrone the top-ranked Aussies.

This emerged during the press conference at the OR Tambo International Airport after the arrival of the Australians yesterday.

Australia coach Tim Nielsen and captain Ricky Ponting told reporters they were confident of winning the series.

Ponting said they were looking forward to a good and exciting match against the hosts.

"We will put our hands together in these Test matches because we have learnt a lot from our past mistakes against the South Africans," he said.
