Police in Mpumalanga have launched a manhunt for 13 dangerous awaiting-trial prisoners who escaped from holding cells at Siyabuswa police station at the weekend.

Police spokesman Superintendent Abie Khoabane said the escape was discovered early on Saturday.

"There were 27 prisoners locked up in the cell but only 14 remained. We do routine cell checks during the night and the officer on duty was surprised to find the 13 missing.

"The prisoners escaped by cutting through the bars of the cell door. They gained entry into the training area and then helped each other go up the wall by climbing on one another's shoulders."

The escapees had been arrested for murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, rape, attempted rape, armed robbery, escape from lawful custody, housebreaking, theft and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

They include Thomas Mazibe, Sifiso Paulos Mhlangu, Enoch Mbuduma Mabena and Abel Mbonane.

Khoabane warned the public not to confront the men as they are regarded as dangerous.

He urged the public to report the suspects' whereabouts to the nearest police station - or contact Inspector Mpedi Aphane on 072-446-5721.
