The daughter-in-law of former ANC president Chief Albert Luthuli has slammed Cope for "abusing his name to justify their breakaway from the ruling party".

"My father-in-law will be turning in his grave disapproving of what they [Cope] are doing to his party." said Veli Luthuli.

Luthuli, the Speaker of KwaDukuza municipality, says the family still believes in the fundamental principles of the ANC. She was married to Luthuli's youngest son S'bu, who has since passed away.

Cope is trying to make inroads KwaDukuza and Groutville.

"They cannot claim they are holding our father's legacy and principles while tarnishing the image of his party."

Luthuli said her father-in-law would have worked hard to resolve conflicts within the party rather than to stand aside and bemuse others.
