Well, at least our politicians have promised to forgo political violence these elections. Now we the people must hold them to their word.

Sixteen parties on Friday pledged to stick to the terms of the electoral code, which means they will embrace non-violent and non-intimidating electioneering.

One would have hoped that 15 years into democracy such pledges would be unnecessary. But recent events in KwaZulu-Natal have shown that too often our politics are still filled with intolerance.

Democracy means giving a voice to all without the fear of violent retribution.
