Amendments to the Performers' Protection Act have been welcomed as a "huge financial relief" to performers.
The Creative Workers Union of South Africa (CWUSA) general secretary Oupa Lebogo yesterday said the act previously offered performing artists little protection and denied them the right to earn royalties for their work.
He said many artists died poor because they were not entitled to royalties.
"The act now provides new opportunities for recording and performing artists to earn income from their intellectual property and creativity," he said.
Lebogo said the act "ensured that every artist who participated in the creation of sound recording and films benefits as a rights holder as stipulated in the Copyright Act".
"It is unfortunate that some of our greatest music legends didn't live long enough to reap the fruits of their sweat."
