Elda Thandi Nkosi dedicated her life to serving the Lord and her community.

She served God and the Church of the Nazarene side by side with her anointed husband Reverend Robert Nkosi.

A teacher by profession, Elda Nkosi took it upon herself not only to offer educational guidance to the young and old, but spiritual guidance as well.

She opened a school for adults at her church. Nkosi was active in community projects and spent most of her time during elections, working for the Independent Electoral Commission, teaching people about their right to vote.

Nkosi was born on April 21 1949 in Jabavu, Soweto. She started her education at Community Primary School and matriculated at Morris Isaacson High School in Jabavu.

She furthered her studies at St Chads Teachers College.

In 1972 she married Robert Nkosi, now deceased.

In 1974 Nkosi started teaching at Thabene Primary in Vryheid, KwaZulu-Natal.

She moved to Ekuphumeleni Higher Primary in Jabulani, Soweto and was later appointed principal of Busisiwe Primary School in Zola.

Nkosi was blessed with five children. Her son, Reverend Praise Nkosi, said his mother taught them to respect God and to always help the community.

"She would sacrifice for a neighbour even when we had nothing at home," he said.

He said his mother always advised them to choose careers that would contribute to the community.

Nkosi will be buriedtomorrow. The funeral service will be at Jabulani Technical College from 9am.

The cortege will leave for Avalon Cemetery at noon.
