Sophia Kutumela wept with joy when she received her RDP house.

The move ended decades of living in a rickety tin house with her adult children and grandchildren

For the 86-year-old widow February 11 will be a day to remember. That is the day Limpopo's local government and housing MEC Maite Nkoana-Mashabane handed her a proper house.

Kutumela from Extension 4, Marapong township, has lived her entire life with her big family in a small house at Ga-Seleka village outside Lephalale.

Her pension and her daughter's meagre domestic-worker wage was not enough to build the family a decent house, Kutumela said.

"I have spent most of my adult life with my grandchildren. It was awkward because we have grown-up boys in the house.

"I prayed that our situation would improve, but I had little hope. I am glad that my prayers have been answered," she said.

Yesterday, 1775 RDP houses were handed over to residents.
