Police Superintendent Ronel Otto said the guards were on the Mica road at about 2pm on Tuesday when they were "ambushed by an unknown number of robbers" travelling in two BMW cars.
"The robbers forced their car off the road and once the cash van stopped they opened fire on it.
"After searching the van the robbers then sped off in their cars with an undisclosed amount of money."
One guard was shot in the back while the other suffered a head wound. Both men were taken to a nearby hospital.
