A man and his fiancée were arrested after they allegedly tried to bribe police to release their friends who had been arrested for an attempted hijacking in Zuurbekom on the West Rand.

The couple allegedly offered to pay R15000 for their friends' freedom yesterday.

"Three men had been arrested for an attempted hijacking of a truck when one of the suspects received a call pleading for their release," said police spokesman Solomon Sibiya.

He said police set up a trap and agreed to meet with the caller.

"A 39-year-old man and his 36-year-old fiance arrived with cash at the agreed scene and they were duly arrested for bribery," he said.

Sibiya said one of the alleged hijackers had been shot in the leg trying to flee the police. The other suspects are due to appear in the Randfontein magistrate's court today.
