Cotto only has eyes for Jennings

NEW YORK - Miguel Cotto is not looking past his fight next week against England's Michael Jennings even after the suspension of Antonio Margarito ruined hopes of a rematch with the only fighter to beat him.

NEW YORK - Miguel Cotto is not looking past his fight next week against England's Michael Jennings even after the suspension of Antonio Margarito ruined hopes of a rematch with the only fighter to beat him.

Puerto Rico's Cotto, 32-1 with 26 knockouts, will fight top-rated challenger Jennings, 34-1 with 16 knockouts, on February 21 at Madison Square Garden for the lightly-regarded World Boxing Organisation (WBO) crown.

"I'm ready for the fight," Cotto said on Wednesday.

""I'm going next week to win the fight. I'm not thinking of anyone else. I'm focused on Michael Jennings."

Plans for a Cotto rematch with Mexico's Margarito were knocked out Tuesday when California boxing officials stripped Margarito of his boxing licence for a year after hard pads were discovered in his gloves ahead of a January 24 fight.

Margarito, who had beaten Cotto last year for the World Boxing Association welterweight title, did not fight with the hard pads in his gloves and was stopped in the ninth round by US veteran Shane Mosley. - Sapa-AFP
