A student who obtained eight distinctions in last year's matric examinations lost an opportunity to be rewarded in the Sasol Prestigious Awards.

The award recognised the province's best 10 matriculants.

Maricke Euckermann, 18, who attended Hoerskool Hoognehourt in Bethal, Mpumalanga, is just one of the many pupils to have had problems because the results have not been released.

About 600 matriculants have not yet received their results.

Euckermann's father, Johan, said his daughter was at the University of Pretoria but had received her results only after the Sasol function early this year. "She would have received the awards from Sasol if her results had arrived as expected," he said.

Another pupil, Nhlanhla Nkuna, 22, who attended Bonginhlanhla High School at Daatjie, received his results only on Tuesday. "It is too late for me to plan anything. The results delay demoralised me so much."

Institutions of higher education have also closed their doors for admissions.

Sowetan has learnt that the education department in Mpu-malanga might have lost some pupils' scripts.

Hamzer Ngwenya, spokes-man for the ANCYL in Mpumalanga, confirmed that the league also heard about the loss, but said: "We don't want to believe that."

Provincial education department spokesman Jasper Zwane dismissed the allegations, saying this was "just not possible".

He said the department was doing its best to deal with the outstanding results.
