Need for controlled spending

Government is wasting money on uncontrolled spending on foreign travel, advertising, consultants, and public relations.

Delivering his Budget Speech to Parliament yesterday, Finance Minister Trevor Manuel said members of Parliament "must take stronger action in pursuit of efficiency and better targeted expenditure".

"There is insufficient control on foreign travel, advertising and public relations activities and consultancy services, " he said.

Parliament should also get tough on overbloated salaries raked in by executives in state-owned enterprises, said Manuel.
