The mob used sjamboks to beat Mike Sibanyoni to death at 9pm on Tuesday, said Superintendent Malcolm Mokomene.
He said the motive of the assault was not yet known as nobody at the scene wanted to talk to police when they arrived.
No arrests have been made, he said.
In a separate incident, a woman was fatally stabbed by her husband outside their home in Verulam, near Barberton, said Mokomene.
He said a 21-year-old man stabbed his 21-year-old wife in the neck with a sharp object. She was taken to the nearest hospital where she later died.
