Cope sets sights on Moloto

Cope in Limpopo has nominated current premier Sello Moloto as its premier-elect.

This was confirmed by Cope provincial chairman Solly Mokhashoa yesterday.

He said the leadership was mobilising branches and regions in the province to ensure that Moloto's nomination received the necessary support.

He said they had not approached Moloto to check if he was ready to accept the nomination, but would do so "as and when the time is right".

Moloto's Cope nomination does not come as a total surprise.

His name has, for some time, been associated with a move to the new splinter party following attempts by the ANC to have him removed from his position.

Moloto, who replaced Ngoako Ramatlhodi in 2004, was tipped to go for a second term as premier of the province.

After his defeat for the ANC chairmanship by Cassel Mathale at the provincial conference in July last year, Moloto was put under pressure to reshuffle his cabinet to accommodate Mathale.

He finally relented after former roads and transport MEC Justice Piitso was appointed ambassador to Cuba in December. Mathale took over this position.

Efforts to get Moloto's comment drew a blank yesterday.
