SHOWOFF SHOWDOWN

Zenoyise Madikwa

Zenoyise Madikwa

Since the SA Film and Television Awards were the first red carpet awards this year, fashion critics were hoping that the stars would come out wearing gorgeous gowns and stylish suits.

Here, we scrutinise the good, the bad and the "what the hell were you thinking?" from the State Theatre event.

The awards were a star-studded affair, though Generations stars boycotted the event.

Another noticeably absent celeb was the Gauteng first lady-in-waiting Uyanda Mbuli. Was she taking a first-lady etiquette crash course?

Not all those who showed up hit it right with their looks, but let's start with the hotties:

l When I saw Mduduzi Mabaso arrive wearing a beautifully fitting black suit I was shocked. What a transformation: from his usual tsotsi look to a red carpet star.

l Another being who glowed was Nambitha Mpumlwana in a flattering floor-length gown.

l Basetsana Kumalo looked classy in her blue one-shouldered gown, but her earrings were out of place.

l The matriarch of Muvhango, Candy Mkondeleli, finally took the long-overdue award home in a black and gold number.

l Terry Pheto looked age-appropriate, fun and classy in a short cream dress. She was the best dressed of the night. And DJ Sbu was a suitable accessory.

l Pepsi Pokane, Romeo Kumalo, Ray Nkwe and Robert Marawa were their usual hunky selves.

And, as always, there were some questionable fashion choices.

l Andile Gaelisiwe showed up in a super-short dress that made her look like, um...

l Nonhle Thema has great potential, but something went wrong with her dress length.

l Penny Lebyane was not up-to-celebrity-fabulousness. She was too simple for my liking.

l Zizo Beda: Child, hit the gym before you look like HHP.

l I could smell Khanyisile Mbau's desperation for attention metres from the theatre.

l Manaka Ranaka has no class. She terrified the masses with an ensemble that looked like it was bought from the Oriental Plaza.

l Lebo Mashile looked like a housewife. Her dress was just so dull.
