Mpumalanga police are investigating an alleged syndicate involved in the smuggling of uncut diamonds.

This comes after the arrest of a man who was allegedly found with uncut diamonds valued at R52000.

Police believe some of the diamonds were sold outside the country while others were illegally being sold in the country.

The organised crime unit's commander, Senior Superintendent Obed Ngwenya said police received a tip-off last week about a diamond dealer in Groblersdal.

"We arranged that a policeman pose as a buyer. After he sold some to the officer we searched him and found R52000 worth of uncut diamonds." - Riot Hlatshwayo
