The KwaZulu-Natal government will honour 12 elderly people who perished when the KwaBadala Home for Senior Citizens in Nkandla caught fire on November 2007.

Speaking in Nkandla, northern Zululand, during the sod-turning ceremony of a R32million facility centre, Premier Sbu Ndebele said the government will erect a tomb stone with the names of all the people who perished on that night.

"The least we can do is to keep their memories alive by erecting a stone with their names inscribed on it. Their death has opened our eyes, as a result we felt it befitting to build the centre that will not only cater for the elderly, but for all people of Nkandla," said Ndebele.

The home will cater for 100 senior citizens - 40 females and 60 males. It is expected to be completed by November.
