Nineteen matriculants who excelled in the Engen Schools Incubator programme were recognised at a gala dinner on Saturday.
The ceremony to honour pupils who passed through the programme was held at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, from where the programme is run.
The awards function was the fourth since the inception of the programme.
The school at Wits University is one of the six which are based at tertiary institutions across the country to address the skills shortage in the country.
Other schools are based at the Durban University of Technology, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, University of Fort Hare in East London and New Horizons School in Qala, Eastern Cape.
The incubator schools focus on producing high-calibre pupils in the areas of maths, science and English.
The school accommodates pupils from grades 10 to 12 and is results-based.
To secure a place in the incubator programme, pupils need to excel academically in their own school.
Pupils then attend three hour-long sessions on Saturday mornings. Of the 53 graduates who passed this year, 19 earned distinctions.
Of the 19, nine earned two or more distinctions and four earned six or more distinctions.
Engen's corporate social investment manager Khanyisa Balfour commended this year's results.
"The success of these graduates is proof that the incubator programme is working and we are extremely proud of the performance of our pupils," said Balfour.
Top achievers Sithenjwa Mzili of Tetelo High School in Protea North, Soweto, and Yamkela Mtati of Lethulwazi High School in Vosloorus, each received R7500 for their excellence.
All the other pupils who received a distinction each received a cheque for R2500.
