About 250 people had registered to vote at NG Kerk voting station in Fairlands by midday yesterday, a number IEC staff say is impressive.
Registrar Busisiwe Mthembu said a large number had also come to confirm their registration. Among those who came there was musician and activist Doc Shebeleza.
"I've voted since Nelson Mandela because I'm proudly South African. People should understand that considering where we come from as a nation, this is a right that everyone should exercise.
"I was inspired by President (Kgalema) Motlanthe's speech on Friday and decided to come here and verify my details," he said.
In Soweto, Sowetan spotted boxing champion Boitshepo Mandawe registering to vote at Tshwelelang Primary School in Meadowlands.
Mandawe said he thought it was important to register to vote because "if you don't vote, you can't complain, it's as simple as that".
Registration supervisor Yvonne Rampou said they had registered 90 people by 1pm yesterday.
While this weekend voter registration drive was the last one by the IEC, people are encouraged to continue registering at their local municipality offices - at least until the election date is announced.
