One of South Africa's top choreographers and classical dance experts will soon shine overseas as a lecturer at a top classical dance university.

Andries Weidemann, principal dancer with the South African Ballet Theatre (SABT), will shortly be leaving for Perth, Australia.

Weidemann has accepted an offer to join the West Australian Academy for the Performing Arts at Edith Cowen University.

He will take up his new position as lecturer of classical dance and, rather than performing, will focus on lecturing and choreography.

Weidemann was born in Pretoria and studied ballet at Pro Arte School. He joined the State Theatre Ballet as an aspirant in 1994.

In 2001 he was invited to join The South African Ballet Theatre.

He was part of the group of SABT dancers who performed with stars of The Royal Ballet in Pretoria in 2007 and with The Royal Danish Ballet in Denmark.

He was also the first SABT dancer to guest with the National Ballet of Zimbabwe.

The South African Ballet Theatre is currently in rehearsal for its first season of 2009, the fairytale ballet Cinderella.
