Relegation haunted Bloemfontein Celtic fought for a deserved 2-1 win over Ajax Cape Town in a thrilling Absa Premiership match at Seisa Ramabodu Stadium yesterday.
The hosts, firing from all cylinders, scored in the 22nd minute through Moses Spandeel. He beat Ajax keeper Andre Petit with a brilliant left-footed strike.
Soon after that and with incensed singing from the stands by the ever vibrant Siwelele, the visiting side seemed more dazed by that than what Phunya Sele Sele were dishing out on the pitch.
Gert Schalkwyk increased the lead in 52nd minute. He first beat an off side trap before dribbling past Petit and slotted home inside an empty net.
Ajax's consolation goal came before the final whistle through Mabhuti Khenyeza who converted a penalty. This after defender Cyril Mubiala had fouled Joseph Alef inside the box.
Celtic could have won by a bigger margin had it not been for their poor finishing.
l Sthembiso Ngcobo's 33rd minute goal was good enough for Free State Stars to defeat Bay United in an Absa Premiership match at Port Elizabeth Stadium yesterday.
This was Stars' second win over United after defeating the pride of the Eastern Cape province 3-2 during their first round match in Welkom last October.
Ngcobo, recalled by Bafana Bafana to replace injured Steven Pienaar in Wednesday's game against Chile in Polokwane, scored the only goal of the game.
Umlilo were reduced to 10 men after MacDonald "Scooter" Mukansi was sent off following a foul on Stars' captain Duncan Lechesa in the 76th minute.
The pacey Mukansi had earlier on in the 67th minute been introduced by United's coach Khabonina Zondo as a replacement for Vincent Khumalo.
In Durban, Maritzburg United eased their relegation worries with a 2-1 win over neighbours AmaZulu. Usuthu took the lead in the 44th minute through an own goal by Gary Goldstone.
The Team of Choice bounced back strongly in the second half and their efforts were rewarded when Bruce Aka equalised in the 70th minute.
Three minutes later, second half substitute Collin Zimba, who came on for Lynch Pule, scored the all important goal.
