The "White Buffalo" is 41-years-old, fat and his "horns" seem to have lost the power to gore but this Witbank-born fighter, baptised Francois Botha, gave a flicker of hope on Friday night.
That hope is about him possibly causing havoc in the heavyweight division internationally.
He won the WBF belt in a unanimous points decision over Ron Guerrero.
Their fight was presented by World Sports Promotion at Tlokwe Banquet hall in Potchefstroom. There were no knock downs but lots of posing, hugging, fouls and some kissing.
Guerrero threatened to send Botha to retirement but he was nowhere near doing that in their lacklustre fight. Guerrero threw a variety of powdered puff punch which Botha did not even bother to avoid.
The latter has his own woes. His midsection looked like that of "Mr Tyre". "We are proud of him as our champion but he must get himself fitter," warned WBF representative, Howard Golberg, after the fight.
Botha's weight was 121,85kg while Guerrero's was 108,60kg. A quarter of a well conditioned Botha that fought Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis, Michael Moorer and Wladir Klitschko, could have blown Guerrero away within the distance.
Botha lost a point for constantly hitting Guerrero with rabbit punches but still strolled to a unanimous points decision of 118-114, 117-111 and 117-110.
That was his 46th victory from 53 fights while Guerrero, an affirmed journeyman with nothing since making his professional debut in 1998, dropped to 16 defeats against 20 wins from 39 fights.
