A hijacker who escaped from jail last year was shot and wounded by the police yesterday.

The 34-year-old man, who has topped the "most-wanted" list for a number of Johannesburg hijackings, was cornered in Orlando, Soweto.

Police captain Lucas Mbense said: "The man has been on the most wanted list for some time."

"When police spotted him in Orlando yesterday and tried to stop him, he sped off. A high speed chase ensued and they caught him near the Total Garage. He was with another man, aged 32, who is alleged to have been his accomplice when he hijacked the cars."

"Once they were cornered the police ordered the pair out of the car. The suspect (the hijacker) allegedly drew a firearm and pointed it at one of the police officers. Police then shot him in the hand and in his left leg. He was taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and his accomplice was also arrested," Mbense said.

The 32-year-old will also be charged with possession of and pointing of a firearm.

In their latest crime spree, the duo are believed to have hijacked a car in Yeoville last month. "The pair will appear in court soon," Mbense added.

n Meanwhile, 176 people were arrested for various crimes in Johannesburg city central during weekend crime combating operations.

Six people were arrested for armed robbery, five for theft, two for common robbery, one for house breaking, one for possession of an unlicensed firearm, 11 for shoplifting, seven for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and for dealing in dagga.

Items seized during the operation included three unlicenced 9mm pistols, ammunition, a stolen vehicle, 19 cellphones and three bags of dagga weighing about 1kg each.
