Finance Minister Trevor Manuel will be under pressure this week when he delivers his Budget Speech to provide funding for the promises made by President Kgalema Motlanthe in his State of the Nation address on Friday.

Motlanthe said government would "find creative ways to raise funds" for its R690billion programme to beef up public infrastructure. He also emphasised the need for job creation and service delivery.

"From 1996 we forgot to emphasise investment in the economy, including increasing employment in sectors of the state that actually matters - education, health and police. But we expect a different kind of Budget Speech this year," SACP general secretary Blade Nzimande told Sowetan.

"The Budget Speech must provide more details about how government will tackle the challenges of poverty and inequality outlined in the State of the Nation address," said Cosatu's Zwelinzima Vavi.
