Man of virtue

President Kgalema Motlanthe is often mocked for his virtues, but we should all go down on our knees and thank our multicultural deities for the man.

President Kgalema Motlanthe is often mocked for his virtues, but we should all go down on our knees and thank our multicultural deities for the man.

His State of the Nation address on Friday showed why.

The stolid, deadpan delivery could not conceal the man's thorough decency.

For though the speech lacked Thabo Mbeki's rhetorical flourishes and Nelson Mandela's grand humanity, it presented a refreshingly honest assessment of the ANC government's failures and its successes, as perceived by an unabashed party loyalist.

He also acknowledged a broad range of worthies who have helped ensure that South Africa is where it is today.

All hail to the nation's loyal servant.
