Negotiations to bring former deputy president Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka into Cope are under pressure and taking longer than expected.

"The pressure to conclude comes from negotiations taking longer than expected," said Cope spokesman Sipho Ngwema yesterday.

Ngwema said Cope had wanted to conclude the negotiations on Saturday. However, he added that he hoped they would finish soon.

There had been widespread speculation since the party launched that Mlambo-Ngcuka would defect from the ANC to Cope.

Mlambo-Ngcuka was among those who resigned when former president Thabo Mbeki was recalled by the ANC last September. - Sapa
